My organizers conference was in Reno in 2008 and we held the first ever NAPO Talent Show. A couple of willing friends and I formed a group we named "Out of Our Comfort Zone" and performed 'Hey Big Spender' My friend and roomy Judy Stern, a gifted percussionist, hauled a drum and bell chime from Santa Rosa, CA to provide a little rhythm support and another friend, Barry Izsack, who is openly gay and comfortable and proud of it, provided the comic relief of being my big spender. The show was set up to mimic American Idol. Our judges were Sandy Jackson (instead of Randy), Paula O'Doul (instead of Abdul) and Simon Scowel (instead of Cowel) and all three members did a great job of being in character and it added a lot to the humor of the evening and to our performance so watch all of the comments as well as just the song. There were about 20 acts in the show and about 150 people in the audience. It was big stretch for me to perform on stage, vamp it up, stay in tune but when it was all said and done we had a lot of fun and my group won for the funniest performance. |
